Adams Landing B&B and Kelsey House, Grand Isle. Best place for a vacation on Lake Champlain

I just spent the best week of vacation, ever, at Adams Landing B&B and the Kelsey House, in Grand Isle, Vt, right on Lake Champlain. Great eating, swimming, boating, walking, and reading on the grand wrap around porch on this historic building. Built in 1840, the Kelsey House, had a huge addition put on in 1900 in a similar style. At one time it was owned by the people who ran Adam's Landing, where the Ticonderoga, now at Shelburne Museum, made frequent stops. Present owners, Jack Sartore and Sally Coppersmith have carefully restored this building over 30 years of time.

Cynthia Knauf's landscape in "Design New England Magazine"

Carolyn L. Bates, with help from wildlife photographer, Peter Larsen, had the great pleasure to photograph one of Cynthia Knauf's fabulous landscapes for Design New England Magazine.

It is in this Sept 2009 issue. Here are some of the photographs from the 6 page story!

Happy Fourth of July

Best place to see the fireworks and have dinner is at the Lake Champlain Community Sailing Center on the waterfront in Burlington, Vt.

Lighting at dinner with architect Nils Luderowski

Lighting is lots of fun when you are dining with your great client, an architect, and his family.  Nils Luderowski specializes in great Adirondack summer camps with a twist.

This photo was taken while I was dining at his historic brick house.

Lake Champlain: A Natural History has won an IPPY Award from Independent Publishers.  The group recognizes the best independently published books of the year. This book tied for a silver for Best Regional Non-Fiction in the US Northeast.  Carolyn L. Bates Photography photographed the cover image from Mt Philo between huge thunderstorms over a two day period.  She has several photos inside as well.  Please go to LCC website: www.lakechamplaincommittee.org or call 802-658-1414 to buy a copy of this book.  It is absolutely marvelously written.

The Beauty of Leddy Park

This Cherry Tree has to be the most beautiful tree in Leddy Park this spring. Hopefully we will be able to prevent any disc golf being in the park, and thus taking the chance that this tree will be cut down to make a path to a fairway.  If you want to help save the woodlands and this tree in Leddy Park, please go to www.leddypark.org.  Thank you.  Carolyn

James Jeffords Science Hall under construction

The latest design by Architect Freeman French Freeman for UVM is under construction. Under the superb guidance of  architect, Jesse Beck, it will be completed next year.  Tonya West, also of FFF, showed me just how beautiful a construction site can be at night.  It almost looks like a finished building!!  But those windows are merely stretched with plastic sheeting.

Historic House for Sale, Burlington

Historic House for Sale.  It awaits restoration.  Great for an Historic B & B. You could have an office in the back for Preservation Burlington, who can supervise the restoration. To maintain the historic context, the horse barn could be a home for hippotherapy program and the prime ag soil used for community gardens.  Contact my friend Lea Terhune for more information:

John Connell's newest PreFab house.

Hard to believe that this house is not only Green, but it is also a Pre Fab house!  John Connell, architect, of 2Morrow Studio, and Gio, worked with me for three days to get just the right camera angles and styling to tell the story of what it really is like to live here.

Sharon and Steve Sisler of Sisler Builders, Stowe, Vt. just used a wonderful porch photo that I had the great pleasure to photograph for them.  And of course, George and Lady Dickens plopped themselves almost center front, so they would be included!!  Look for the ad in Vermont publications.

Chili Cookoff Just the best

Avenue Bistro really put together just the best afternoon the mayoral candidates have had together. Laughing, testing 16 different chilis, huge crowd.  They voted hands down that they would much rather do this again than have a debate.  Here are a couple of photos from this event. Andy Montroll and family are with Lea Terhune and Chuck Seleen. And thank you Susan Luce, owner, for having this event. Complete with beer tasting and music.

RUMFORD HOSPITAL ADDITION IS FABULOUS!!

Lucky me! I had the privilege to photograph this fabulous, colorful, great design of FFF, inc. of the addition to the Rumford Hospital.

Everyone found something to contribute to the new addition, which was "sans" furniture except for 2 hospital beds when I arrived.  John Welch, nurses, staff, doctors, pharmacists, PT, and especially Jane Bubar at the hospital, worked with Steve Mosman, Jesse Beck and Tonya West at FFF to follow my instructions for images.

The icu really shown with its new monitors, red cart, and patient's room, so the nurses brought everyone down to see it. They just loved it. Especially the stuffed animal that would sing and sing and sing and dance on the patient's bed to everyone's amusement (thank you Jane).  As the camera angle was hidden in a nearby closet, I got to listen to this song for 4 hours and I still can't remember what is sang.  Well, I am over 64! Does that count?

Enjoy the photos.

"Being Eighty" published by Carolyn L. Bates Publishing

I just published my second book within a year.  It is all about:

Three days of festivities with my uncle's Nearest and Dearest. Elegant dinner at the Harvard Club on Friday night, grand tour of  THE garden lead by my uncle in his white spats, and a five star brunch by Chef Chava kept everyone laughing and eating for days.  My aunt Joanie was behind the scenes, including bringing in several surprise guests.

"Being Eighty", by Carolyn L. Bates  56 color photos on 40 pages.
